Understand the four modules and your two numbers
The process has four modules: account creation, Universal Registration, Common Application Form (CAF), and the examination-specific form. The first three are reusable; the fourth is completed within the examination’s application window.
- URN: your Universal Registration Number stays the same across UPSC examinations.
- Application Number: identifies the particular examination application. Keep both numbers.
These distinctions are explained on page 1 of the official ESE 2027 notification.
Photo, signature and correction rules to check first
- Photo: CAF requires an uploaded photograph and a live photograph.
- Signature: sign three times, one below another, in black ink on plain white paper. Upload a clear, legible image.
- After submission: applications cannot be withdrawn or corrected.
- URN edits: the one-time profile update does not change an already-submitted application; changes apply to later applications after re-locking the profile.
Source: notification pages 2–3. Use the portal’s current “Instructions and FAQs” for photo, signature and document-upload specifications.
Prepare a small application folder
The following are practical preparation tips. They do not replace UPSC’s instructions or create additional requirements.
- Read eligibility before filling fields. Bookmark the relevant sections of the notice. Write down any question about your qualification or category so you can resolve it before submission.
- Compare your records. Put your identity and education records side by side. Check spelling, dates and certificate details against the information you intend to enter. Do not guess how to resolve a mismatch.
- Name files clearly. Use names such as “photo-final” and “signature-final” so an older scan is less likely to be selected accidentally. Keep personal documents in a private folder.
- Open each file before uploading. Look for missing edges, blur, glare or unreadable text. Check the current permitted format and size on the portal rather than copying specifications from an old exam guide.
- Prepare your device. Test that the camera works and choose a well-lit place. Leave time to solve a browser or upload problem instead of starting near the closing hour.
Final review before you submit
Set aside a separate review pass. Read the completed form slowly rather than immediately clicking through after typing.
- Is the examination name and year the one you intend to apply for?
- Have you compared personal details with the supporting records?
- Have you checked each qualification, category and other claim you entered?
- Are the selected options and centre details intentional?
- Does each uploaded file contain the correct document and remain readable?
- Have you checked the applicable fee and payment instructions in the official notice and portal?
- Have you resolved any warning or incomplete section shown on screen?
After submission, save the confirmation, a copy of the submitted form and any payment acknowledgement provided. Keep these together so you can find them quickly if a later query arises. Avoid sharing screenshots containing personal details in public groups.
If you get stuck
The notification lists UPSC application helpdesk numbers 011-24041001 / 011-40303444 and upscsoap@nic.in, available on working days, 10:00 am–5:30 pm, during the application window (page 4).
Before contacting support, note the module, exact error message and approximate time. Do not send anyone your password or one-time code. If a payment result is unclear, check the portal status and official instructions before attempting another payment.
